About West Shore Living

An informational archive covering coastal property care, shoreline upkeep, and waterfront life along Canada's Pacific coast.

What This Site Covers

West Shore Living is a single-topic information archive focused on the practical concerns of owning and maintaining property near the British Columbia coast. The topics covered — salt exposure, dock maintenance, shoreline stabilisation, humidity management, and waterfront regulations — come up regularly for anyone living within a few kilometres of tidal saltwater in this region.

The articles here draw on published research from the National Research Council of Canada, guidance from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, provincial regulations under BC's Water Sustainability Act, and documented maintenance practice from contractors working in coastal BC. There is no commercial affiliation with any product, contractor, or manufacturer.

The Context

British Columbia's Pacific coastline is one of the longest and most varied in Canada. From the exposed outer coast of Haida Gwaii and Vancouver Island to the sheltered inlets of the Sunshine Coast and the urban foreshore of Metro Vancouver, the conditions facing waterfront property owners vary significantly. A home on an exposed oceanfront lot in Tofino faces different maintenance pressures than a property on a protected inlet near Powell River — but both share a set of concerns that differ fundamentally from those of non-coastal residential properties.

That specific context — BC coastal, not generically "waterfront" — shapes what is covered here. Advice that applies to a lakeside property in Ontario or a Gulf Coast home in the southern US may not translate to the wet, mild, salt-influenced climate of coastal BC. Where research or best-practice guidance applies specifically to this region, that is noted. Where it is general, that is noted too.
